Twenty more Manitobans have died after catching COVID-19, as the number in hospital with the disease reached another new high.
As of Monday morning, there were a record-setting 601 people with COVID-19 in hospital, according to the province’s pandemic dashboard. That number swelled by 84 from Jan. 14, the last time the government provided an update.
Forty-seven COVID-19 patients were receiving intensive care, as of Monday morning, a net increase of two from Jan. 14.
According to the province, the deaths of 20 Manitobans due to the disease caused by the novel coronavirus were reported over the weekend.
They include 16 people from the Winnipeg health region: a woman in her 40s; three men in their 50s; a man in his 60s; a woman in her 60s; two women in their 70s (one connected to the outbreak at Oakview Place Personal Care Home); two men in their 80s (one connected to the outbreak at Actionmarguerite St. Boniface and another to Misericordia Health Centre); five women in their 90s (one linked to the outbreak at West Park Manor, one from Actionmarguerite St. Vital, and one from Prairie View Lodge); and a man in his 90s.
Three men from Prairie Mountain (one in his 70s, one in his 90s, and one centenarian) and one woman in her 60s from the Southern Health region also died.
Outbreaks of COVID-19 were declared at nine more Manitoba long-term care facilities or health centres: Unit B5ME at St. Boniface Hospital; Riverview Health Centre; Deer Lodge Centre; Seven Oaks General Hospital Unit 3U4-7; Victoria General Hospital Unit 5 South; Lions Prairie Manor; Nisichawayasihk care home; Ochekwi Sipi Cree Nation care home; and Rosewood Lodge.
Outbreaks were declared over at Riverview Health Centre (4 West) and Pinawa Hospital.
There were 2,755 new cases confirmed through PCR testing since Jan. 14. The test positivity rate provincewide is 34.5 per cent. A total of 2,356 PCR tests were performed by laboratories Sunday.
The number of reported cases is a significant undercount of infections in the community due to limited PCR testing and the widespread use of rapid antigen tests to diagnose COVID-19. Rapid antigen test results are not routinely collected by the provincial government.
According to the province, during the week ending Jan. 13, there were 335 new hospitalizations (a 40.2 per cent increase from the previous week) and 37 new ICU cases (85 per cent increase).
