Manitoba Hydro is extending its popular Power Smart rebate program to include several more products in addition to energy-saving LED bulbs.

Since the fall of 2014, Manitoba consumers have saved about $3.6 million on their electricity bills using Energy Star certified LED bulbs, which use 80 per cent less energy than regular incandescent bulbs.

From Sept. 30 to Oct. 31 this year, Manitoba Hydro will offer instant rebates on a range of other energy-saving products, including LED fixtures, lighting controls, smart power bars, plug-in timers, low-flow showerheads, weatherstripping and window-insulating film kits.  Credits on Hydro bills are offered for Energy Star-certified washing machines or washer/dryer sets.

It’s also encouraging Manitobans to engage with the “Internet of Things” by also providing credits on Hydro bills for the purchase of a “smart thermostat.” Wi-Fi connected smart thermostats can provide a greater degree of control over a home’s temperature settings. Using algorithms to make heating and cooling suggestions, they can automatically learn individual heating and cooling preferences to optimize warmth and comfort.

The smart thermostat and washer/dryer credits will be available until Jan. 31, 2017.

“Our customers have responded overwhelmingly to our earlier promotions by purchasing and using energy-efficient LEDs in their homes,” said Lloyd Kuczek, vice-president of customer care & energy conservation for Manitoba Hydro. “Our goal with this new promotion is to continue to help our residential customers learn more about other energy-efficient technologies so they can lower their energy bills.”

Retailers participating in the instant rebate program until the end of October are:

  • Ace Canada,
  • Best Buy,
  • Canadian Tire,
  • Co-op grocery stores,
  • Co-op home centres,
  • Costco,
  • EG Penner,
  • Grunthal Lumber,
  • Home Hardware,
  • London Drugs,
  • McMunn & Yates Building Supplies,
  • Robinson Lighting,
  • RONA and RONA Home & Garden,
  • The Home Depot, and
  • WM Dyck & Sons.

Customers can purchase smart thermostats and washers and dryers from any retailer or buy online, and then visit Manitoba Hydro’s website to apply for their rebate.
