A Manitoba woman died from West Nile virus, the province confirmed Thursday.
The victim, who was in her 70s and lived in the southern health region, had pre-existing health problems. No other details were provided in a news release in order to protect her health information.
Health officials believe the woman was exposed to the virus in the summer.
It’s the first West Nile death reported in Manitoba since September 2013, and the ninth since the province began collecting this information. Human cases of West Nile were first reported in Manitoba in 2003.
Shorter days and cooler temperatures at this time of year mean mosquitoes are more likely to bite late in the afternoon and early in the evening. There will continue to be a risk of exposure to the virus until temperatures drop or until the first hard frost, the province said
