The Pan Am Pool is opening its doors again Saturday after $9 million in renovations over the past two months.

The south Winnipeg pool, which was constructed for the 1967 Pan Am Games, closed July 25 and the upgrades — done in preparation for next summer’s Canada Summer Games — were completed on time and on budget, the city said in a release Friday.

“As a former competitive swimmer, it’s especially gratifying to see the improvements made at a world-class facility like Pan Am,” Mayor Brian Bowman said in the release. “I look forward to seeing it on full display in 2017.”

Jeff Hnatiuk, President and CEO of the 2017 Canada Summer Games Host Society said the upgrades to the pool are part of the sport legacy that will be left by the Games.

“Pan Am Pool is the known competitive pool for aquatic sports in Manitoba and these upgrades will help us deliver on our promise of an exceptional athlete experience for our swimmers and divers at Games time,” Hnatiuk said.

A new dual bulkhead system, funded jointly by the City of Winnipeg and the Canada Summer Games, is one of the major improvements. Others include renovations to the dive tower, replacement of the original boiler system and electrical upgrades, along with improvements to the front reception area as well as the locker and shower areas. The main pool area has been painted and improvements were made to the parking lot.

The host society, which contributed $550,000 towards the bulkhead system, will also be supplying four new diving boards, 50-metre lane ropes, a timing system and equipment for the diving dryland room at a cost of $170,000.

The Canada Summer Games begin July 28 and continue until Aug. 13.
