Several top-calibre student-athletes in the province received scholarships Monday through the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association.

One high school basketball scholarship and several high school hockey scholarships were given out. All schools from across Manitoba were invited to nominate individuals from their high school hockey and basketball teams.

BASKETBALL

Johnathan Holtmann of Warren Collegiate is this year’s recipient of the Garett Lee Sidor Memorial Scholarship. Holtmann was captain of the hoop squad and helped lead them to a 15-8 record and a provincial championship bid for the first time in four years. He is a member of the cross-country team, a peer tutor, debate team, yearbook editor, grad committee member and assistant coach of the junior varsity basketball team. He also maintained an academic average of 95.3 per cent.

HOCKEY

Samantha Robert and Ethen Winters each received the Alexander Josephson Memorial Scholarship, which is given to one female and one male hockey athlete.

Winters, of William Morton Collegiate in Gladstone, maintained an 86 per cent academic average while also participating in cross-country, volleyball, track and field, basketball, and baseball. He is actively involved in dirt-bike racing and volunteering to create and maintain the dirt bike track for the Manitoba Dirt Riders.

Robert, of Murdoch MacKay Collegiate, maintained an 88 per academic average, while playing high school and AA hockey. She also played soccer and was involved in theatre productions, as well as the graduation committee.

The Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame and Museum, which sponsors two awards, recognized Bryson Loewen and Corey (Coco) Diamond-Burchuk.

Loewen, of W.C. Miller Collegiate in Altona, is the recipient of the Ken “Friar” Nicolson Award. He was the captain of his hockey team, was named a Zone 4 league all-star and was presented the Lloyd C. Orchard Most Sportsmanlike Player Award. He is a member of his school’s baseball, badminton, cross-country and track teams. Loewen maintained an academic average of 95 per cent.

The Sami Jo Small Award was awarded to Diamond-Burchuk of Kelvin High School. She was team captain of the school’s female hockey team this year, was named player of the week in the CTV Division and was a finalist for the Sportswoman Award in the CTV Division of the WWHSHL. Diamond-Burchuk was also a member of the school’s soccer, cross-country, and indoor and outdoor track teams, and devotes plenty of time to volunteer work while maintaining a 90 per cent academic average.

The D’Arcy Bain/Fred Stevenson Award went to Liam Bachewich of Erickson Collegiate. He was assistant captain of his hockey team for two years, was second on the team in points and led the team in playoff points. He also captained the volleyball team, played on the basketball and badminton teams and was awarded a leadership and athleticism award for baseball. He maintained a 91.71 per cent academic average.

Jayde Boyechko of Murdoch MacKay Collegiate and Zachary DeGraeve of Treherne Collegiate each won the Winnipeg Jets Alumni and Friends Scholarship, awarded to one female and male player.

Boyechko finished in the Top 10 in scoring this year in the WWHSHL. She moved around from position to position throughout the year and was one of the hardest working players on the team. She is also a goalie for her AA U18 Angels ringette team, and a ringette instructor. Boyechko maintained an 88 per cent average in class.

DeGraeve maintains an academic average of 93 per cent while participating in hockey, cross-country, golf, volleyball, and basketball. He is a member of the leadership team at the school and was in charge of organizing and leading events for the student body, and helps coach the junior varsity boys volleyball and basketball teams.
