Plugging in headphones and watching the fireworks on your computer screen — Canada Day at The Forks is going to be very different this year.

The fireworks show at The Forks is cancelled, but they will carry on the tradition in a different way. The Forks announced on Wednesday it will be sharing an hour-long variety show on its Facebook and YouTube pages for Manitobans to celebrate the 153rd Canada Day from home.

Clare MacKay, executive director at The Forks Foundation, said they figured having the usual celebrations would be off the table once they saw large-scale events start being cancelled in June.

“We’ve never missed a Canada Day,” said MacKay. “We thought this was the right thing to do and the best thing to do under the circumstances.”

The Canada Day Virtual video will feature performances from local pop singer Faouzia, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, local comedians, a fireworks show put on by Archangel Fireworks and more.

“Our hope in doing this was to bring together all the incredible Manitoba talent and give them an audience they don’t have right now,” said MacKay. “And it was great to work with Archangel. They are award-winning and this has been a tough year for the fireworks business.”

MacKay said the video has a lot of different voices and genres for everyone. She also teased there will be an announcement in the next couple weeks about a new portion of the show.

Crews filmed most of the video around the Forks last week and wrapped up on Wednesday. MacKay said the crew kept their social distance and had the appropriate gear for each filming day.

“Even Taylor Janzen and the WSO performance was filmed in an empty CN Field,” she said.

MacKay added that even if conditions improve prior to Canada Day, gathering sizes likely wouldn’t be large enough and there still will be no in-person show this year.
