Grocery and essential services retail workers are effectively on the front lines during the COVID-19 crisis and Walmart Canada is rewarding their staff for the effort.

The company announced that its managers and hourly associates will receive close to $100 million in total cash bonuses including $3.4 million for the workers in the company’s 16 stores in Manitoba.

The bonuses are in addition to a $2 per hour premium hourly workers will receive through the month of April.

“We are incredibly proud of all Manitoba associates, who truly show our Walmart spirit by rising to the challenge of these unprecedented times. These associates are working hard every day to take care of our customers, service our communities and to support each other,” said Derreck Cuschieri, Walmart’s vice-president, Western Canada.

To show that appreciation, all full-time hourly workers will receive a $200 bonus and part-time workers will receive $100.

Workers will get an additional 10 per cent discount for two shopping days.

“This will help enable associates to purchase the essentials they need,” Cuschieri said.

The company accelerated the deposit of its annual incentive plan payouts by two weeks. Eligible associates were to receive those payments on Friday.

The company has introduced new protocols to increase cleaning and safety and to reinforce social distancing. Carts, baskets, checkouts, and doors are being cleaned throughout the day and increased cleaning will occur overnight.

Plexiglass dividers have been installed, social distancing signage has been put up as well as marking the floor with tape to create social distancing.

The company has institued a number of policies for enhanced safety. All receipts go into a customer’s bag, not in customer’s hands; people who bring in reusable bags will be required to bag their own purchases; and stores are limiting the number of customers shopping in the store at one time.

Stores are temporarily dedicating the opening hour of the store exclusively for seniors (ages 65 and above), the disabled, and those with vulnerable health conditions, from 7 am to 8 am, weekdays only.
