What’s open, what’s closed this weekend

Amid loosened restrictions and more to do, many Manitobans taking time off over the long weekend will take a minute to remember Winnipeg-born icon of hope and perseverance Terry Fox, who ran 5,373 kilometres over 143 days to raise money for cancer research.

The holiday, first named Terry Fox Day in 2015, occurs on the first Monday in August. This year, the holiday falls after low COVID-19 case numbers resulted in loosened restrictions this month, including greater capacity limits for indoor and outdoor gatherings and the reopening of movie theatres and museums.

The Free Press is not publishing a print edition Monday but will publish an e-edition that’s free to all subscribers.

Many businesses and government services change their hours over the August long weekend.

Here’s a selection:

COVID-19 test sites

All COVID-19 testing sites in Winnipeg are open at normal times Monday. The walk-in site at 1 Research Rd. and the drive-thrus at 125 King Edward St. and 1066 Nairn Ave., are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. A pop-up testing site at 1181 Portage Ave. is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Testing sites at 604 St. Mary’s Rd., 2735 Pembina Hwy., Thunderbird House and the drive-thru site at 1284 Main St. are open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The walk-in site at 1125 Empress St. is open 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The walk-in site at the Garrick Centre is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the 2055 Notre Dame Ave. site is open 5-9 p.m., and Dakota Medical Centre is open 6-10 p.m.

Vaccination booking phone lines will be open as normal Monday.

The Aboriginal Health and Wellness Centre vaccination site is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

Shopping

Most malls are operating at reduced hours. Kildonan Place, St. Vital Centre and CF Polo Park are open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Grant Park Shopping Centre is open from noon until 5 p.m.

The Forks Market is open at reduced capacity. Indoor and outdoor capacity is currently at a 50 per cent limit.

Most grocery stores, including Safeway, Sobeys, Superstore and Walmart, are open.

Manitoba Liquor Mart stores in Winnipeg are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For details on exceptions and rural Liquor Mart hours, visit www.LiquorMarts.ca/hours.

Beer vendors and private wine stores set their own hours for the holiday, so Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries suggests the best way to find out if the one near you will be open is to call.

 

Entertainment

The Assiniboine Park Zoo is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Manitoba Museum is closed.

The Children’s Museum is closed.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is closed.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is closed.

Movie theatres are open at reduced capacity.

 

Recycling and trash

Recycling and garbage will be collected. The City is advising people to put their carts out on regular collection day.

The Brady Road landfill is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Pacific 4R Winnipeg Depot and Panet 4R Winnipeg Depot are both closed.

 

Leisure activities

All city leisure centres are closed.

The Crescent Drive, Harbour View, John Blumberg, Kildonan Park and Windsor Park golf courses are open from sunrise to sunset.

City-owned indoor swimming pools, including Cindy Klassen and Pan Am, are closed.

City-owned outdoor pools are open, with hours varying by pool. Search City of Winnipeg Outdoor Pools or call 311 for more information.

Central Park wading pool are open from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. McKittrick Park and Westdale wading pools will run from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Dakota Park will operate from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

City spray pads are open from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

 

Winnipeg transit

On Monday, buses will operate on a Sunday schedule.

Libraries

All Winnipeg Public Library branches are closed.

Cemeteries

Brookside, St. Vital and Transcona cemetery grounds are open. Cemetery offices will be closed on the holiday.

Civic and provincial offices are closed, but some federal services remain available.

The Winnipeg Parking Authority is closed.

The Winnipeg Animal Services Agency is closed.

There is no mail delivery on Monday. Canada Post offices are closed, but post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.
