On May 18, 1928: The Manitoba Free Press reported that in Thackerville, Okla., a tornado ripped every house from its foundations and storms had caused two deaths and $1 million worth of damage. In China, Marshall Chang Tso-Lin’s offer of a truce from Peking in the ongoing civil war was rejected by the Nationalists, as hostilities approached ever nearer to the capital. Otto Swanson, a trapper and homesteader at Whitemouth Lake, had been missing for eight days and was feared dead.
