AN annual fundraising campaign in support of United Way Winnipeg has pulled in $21.6 million to fund agencies that offer newcomer services, youth development opportunities, and mental health resources.
The United Way shared the results of its fundraising effort with hundreds of donors Thursday evening during its annual Celebration event at the convention centre. Officials said the 2019 campaign proved to be the most successful appeal in the organization’s history.
“We achieved this record-breaking goal because of the immense generosity of the people and businesses of our city,” volunteer campaign chairman Jeff Goy said in a statement.
“Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time, gave whatever they could and helped to make a difference. Together, we are empowering the vital network of community agencies that serve hundreds of thousands of Winnipeggers.”
More than 100 donor-supported organizations will receive funding generated during the campaign, with a focus on children, poverty eradication, and health and community well-being. Agencies supported by United Way Winnipeg include Inclusion Winnipeg, Jewish Child and Family Service, and Kildonan Youth Activity Centre, among many others.
“United Way Winnipeg was founded over 50 years ago with the fundamental belief that when we come together and give in a united way, we can create social change,” volunteer board chairwoman Joan Hardy said. “United Way Winnipeg is doing that every day.”
