Nygard to resign after raids: Winnipeg fashion mogul Peter Nygard announced Tuesday he’s stepping down as chairman of the Nygard companies and will divest his ownership interest. Protest planned: A round dance protest — in support of the Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs and their opposition to a pipeline project in northern British Columbia — is expected to shut down Portage and Main from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Meanwhile, three people were arrested at a protest for the same cause in Toronto Tuesday night. Assisted-dying amendments: The Liberal government will introduce amendments to the assisted-dying law. Sources told The Canadian Press medical assistance in dying will no longer be limited to people who are near death. A post-approval waiting period for the procedure will be eliminated, as will a requirement that a person give consent a second time. READ MORE

Museum CEO stepping down: Claudette Leclerc announced she will retire next month after 23 years as CEO of the Manitoba Museum — nearly half the time it has existed. The museum’s board of governors said it will begin a national search for Leclerc’s replacement.

On Feb. 26, 1988: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that six members of the Montreal SWAT team were ordered to pay $250,000 in damages to a widow for a 1978 raid in which they sprayed her apartment with bullets, killing her husband and wounding her. Manitoba premier Howard Pawley was ready to take up the federal government’s challenge and fight in court if Ottawa forced Manitoba into accepting its free trade deal with the United States.
