Jetcetera struck by karma again

Good morning, folks.

Some of you may recall me writing last month about how I forgot to press the record button one Wednesday afternoon when Mike McIntyre and I got together to produce our weekly Jetcetera podcast. Forty minutes of golden blah blah blah that you never got to hear.

One of you wrote to suggest that it could have been karma — payback for us being so hard on the Jets.

Well, karma struck again this Wednesday. Or in the words of our producer — lifestyle columnist Jen Zoratti — “Argh! Technology!”

There’s a lot of karma in technology, now that I think about it.

Anyhoo, after several hours of fiddling with a corrupted file on our memory card, photo editor Mike Aporius and Jen managed to save some of our latest ramblings.

So for those of you who missed getting the link yesterday morning, without further karma complications, I present Jetcetera Episode 48: They don’t ask how, just how many.

Honest, we said nice things — about the Jets and Jays, anyways.

By the way, since I mentioned Jen: watch for a new newsletter from her starting Feb. 3, called NEXT.

At a time in which we can start envisioning a post-pandemic life, Jen will look to have us examine the lessons we’ve learned, talk about what has changed, what hasn’t changed, and what you hope will change.

Back to hockey — and I’m going to be very careful what I say here, as we have to record another podcast next Wednesday — here are a few random thoughts on last night’s game:

  • Holy Heinola, Batman. They had the right Finn on defence last night. The 19-year-old first-round pick looked smooth as silk in his season debut;
  • Why do announcers these days think we need to know how many shots a team had on an unsuccessful power play?;
  • Jets are way better defensively when they play a strong offensive game. Thank you, Captain Obvious;
  • Those Fisherman’s Friend commercials crack me up. Jon Hamm’s schtick is growing old;
  • It’s much easier to say positive things about our home teams, when they win. Just saying.

As always folks, you can reach me by replying to this mailing or by sending me an email here.

Our Coverage

Mike McIntyre and Jason Bell took in the game — from their respective couches — and file these reports:

Two down, one to go: Mike has his take on the Jets winning the second of three games vs the Senators this week;

Fantastic Finn: He also has a story on Ville Heinola making his season debut;

Milestone victory: And, Jason has a yarnon Connor Hellebuyck just missing a shutout but notching his 150th career win.

In other news, MIke Sawatzky has a pair of hockey stories:

Comeback trail: Manitoba’s Brigette Lacquette has worked herself back into top shape after a lengthy rehab from a broken leg. Mike Sawatzky chatted with the 2018 Olympic silver medallist on Thursday and files a story on how she is competing to regain her roster spot on Canada’s national women’s hockey team as it prepares for the world championship this spring;

What we’re reading

Biden and the Beautiful Game: New U.S. president has helped inaugurate an MLS club, been to three World Cups, had a say on equal pay and, as the new POTUS, will play a part in 2026 World Cup preparations. Here are the tales from his time around the highest levels of soccer;

Cathal Kelly: Globe and Mail columnist writes that management has the Blue Jays on the edge of something fun with the signing of George Springer;

Baseball’s harassment issues extend far beyond Jared Porter: New York Times story on how women around the game endure indignities their male colleagues rarely even consider. Porter’s abhorrent treatment of a reporter is just the latest example.
