Furtado to headline Aboriginal Day Live

Grammy-winning artist Nelly Furtado and Manitoba francophone singer-songwriter Daniel Roa will headline this year’s Aboriginal Day Live in Winnipeg.

In conjunction with the Canada 150 celebrations, Winnipeg and seven other cities from coast to coast — Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Yellowknife, Edmonton and Vancouver — will hold events June 21.

This year’s performers were announced Thursday.

In Winnipeg, the free daytime program of activities and live evening concert at The Forks will also feature performances by Skyler, Sonia Eidse, Chuck Copenace Group, Renée Lamoureux and 11-member musical collective Burnt Project 1.

It is the 11th annual Aboriginal Day Live, held to acknowledge the accomplishments of indigenous peoples and bring Canadians together through cultural activities and live music while contributing to the nationwide movement of reconciliation.

Organized by the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network with financial support from the federal government through the Canada 150 Fund, this year’s event is being billed as the largest National Aboriginal Day celebration in history.

The celebrations will include a variety of musical genres and languages along with interdisciplinary arts from First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, a news release said.

The concert will be broadcast on APTN beginning at 7 p.m. that night, online at aboriginaldaylive.ca and via indigenous radio stations.

There will also be a sunrise ceremony, a round dance, artisans, children’s activities, a powwow, a skateboard competition, storytelling and traditional games.
