Super Tuesday for Pallister: We kick-start Head Start with news that Brian Pallister will be sworn in as premier of Manitoba on Tuesday, May 3 at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. The date is exactly two weeks after his Progressive Conservative Party won big in the provincial election. Pallister and his newly appointed cabinet will be sworn in at the same time, in the group entrance of the museum. The rest of the 40-member PC caucus will be sworn in May 11. READ MORE

Your forecast: Get outside, come what May. Good spring weather has been scarce in April, but we’re in for a real treat as a new month rolls in. Environment Canada is projecting six straight days of sunshine and steadily climbing temperatures during that stretch, beginning with a high of 15 C today. On Saturday and Sunday, expect highs of 15 C and 16 C, respectively, while Monday’s high is 18 C and Tuesday could hit 19 C. The mercury soars to 23 C on both Thursday and Friday, folks.

Who will lead them?: Today, members of the New Democratic Party executive are expected to meet to discuss the recommendation for who should be the interim Manitoba leader of the party. Members of Premier Greg Selinger’s caucus met earlier this week in a closed-door meeting to discuss their own thoughts on who the next boss should be. That information will be given to the executive at today’s meeting, leading to a recommendation for the party’s 140-member provincial council to vote on.

Wheaties geared for Game 5: The Brandon Wheat Kings can punch a ticket to the Western Hockey League final with a home-ice playoff victory tonight. The Wheat Kings have taken three of four games from the Red Deer Rebels and can sew up the best-of-seven Eastern Conference series tonight in Game 5 at Brandon’s Westman Place. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. Awaiting the winner of the series are the Seattle Thunderbird, who swept the Kelowna Rockets in four straight games to capture the Western Conference Championship.

Heating costs: Manitoba Hydro rates are going up in August by 3.3 per cent. The Public Utilities Board approved the rate increase, which will cost the average customer without electric heating $2.83 more a month. READ MORE

Oshie fires hat trick: Washington forward T.J. Oshie scored his third goal of the game at 9:33 of overtime to lift the Capitals to a 4-3 triumph over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 1 of a marquee best of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series. That caused the hats to rain down on the Verizon Center ice, although the Capitals had to wait to celebrate during a lengthy video review to ensure the puck crossed the goal line on Oshie’s wrap-around play. Chewbacca: The name of Han Solo’s furry companion in the Star Wars movies has been bequeathed to a new species of weevil discovered in New Guinea. Scientists decided to name the creature Trigonopterus chewbacca in part due to the dense fur-like scales around its head and legs.

On April 29, 1967: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that southern Alberta had been hit by 29 inches of wet snow and serious flooding was feared. Subscribers to the Manitoba Medical Service (a voluntary health insurance) were being hit by fee increases of up to 18 per cent. The MMS’s decision to raise the rates was criticized by the province’s Liberal and NDP leaders. In the United States, heavyweight boxing champion Cassius Clay refused induction into the U.S. armed services, leaving himself open to fines and imprisonment. In Manitoba, Daylight Savings Time would take effect overnight.
