Woman ticketed twice for weekend parties

Thompson RCMP ticketed a woman twice for holding parties that violated pandemic restrictions this weekend.

Officers were called to an apartment complex on Cree Road in Thompson after a report of a party at around 11:30 p.m. Saturday and heard loud music coming from the apartment. RCMP said the officers found a large group of people inside. The renter, a 25-year-old woman, was handed a $1,296 ticket for violating the public health order.

RCMP said they received another report of a gathering at the same address at around 8:15 p.m. Sunday. Officers again found multiple people in the apartment, the RCMP said, and ticketed the woman a second time.

Manitoba COVID-19 enforcement officials issued 21 tickets and 121 warnings last week for violations of public health orders.

In a news release Monday, the Manitoba government said 14 tickets with a fine of $1,296 were given to individuals, while four $5,000 tickets were issued to businesses and three $5,150 tickets were issued to individuals in violation of the federal quarantine act between April 12 and Sunday.

Most individual tickets (eight of the 14) were issued in connection with gatherings in private residences or outdoors.

Christian Church of Morden received two $5,000 tickets last week, while Flea Whiskey’s in Winnipeg and Original Joe’s restaurant in Brandon received one $5,000 ticket each.

The government noted security personnel from Commissionairees Manitoba will now advise travellers at the Winnipeg International Airport of self-isolation requirements and distribute public health materials.

Since enforcement began in April 2020, officials have issued 1,180 tickets and 3,804 warnings for a total $1.6 million in fines.
