Bad Brady

Happy Saturday, folks.

The easiest thing to do here, would be to blame Brady Tkachuk. We all love a good villian, right?

Some of you may have noticed, the Ottawa Senators shift disturber showed up where he didn’t belong in our Friday paper. Blake Wheeler was the first star vs the Habs on Thursday, not you pal.

All kidding aside, we had a faux pas x 2 in our 3 Stars feature yesterday. Tkachuk’s photo was in the spot Wheeler’s photo should have been — and, a Mark Scheifele pic was in the spot that second-star Kyle Connor’s pic should have been.

Third star Neal Pionk’s photo was correct, but in this case two out of three — is bad.

I won’t go into all the details of how a mistake like this happens, only to say: there is occasionaly human error in producing a paper, and sometimes there is computer error. This was a case where there was both.

Although I guess it could have been worse — if it had been a picture of Matthew Tkachuk!

The mistake prompted some calls and emails from readers, and a buzz on Twitter that reminded me of my TV viewing this week,

I’m not sure if any of you watch the sitcom Schitt’s Creek — if you don’t, you should really check it out. It’s hilarious. Anyhoo, in episode 5 of Season 6 a premiere viewing of Moira’s movie The Crows Have Eyes 3: The Crowening goes awry when some live crows are released and they immediately proceed to attack everyone. The fiasco hits social media and the old “all press is good press” adage is proved wrong.

In the words of Johnny Rose, “not this time.”

Please don’t mistake my attempt at humour here for flippancy or lack of care when it comes to attention to detail in our sports section.

I had the Mike Babcock of copy editing and proof reading hammer home to me the importance of detail back in my early days, but as the old saying goes — stuff happens and I am again reminded of how I used to be super hard on those around me who made mistalkes, meantime making all sorts of excuses for my own.

One of you who called suggested “maybe, mention it to somebody.”

I will — nicely, of course.

On a lighter note, and to continue deflecting haha, my TV viewing always includes a good sitcom. How about you?

Some of my all-time faves are: Odd Couple, Two and Half Men, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Welcome Back Kotter, Everybody Loves Raymond, Newhart (the Vermont one) and Barney Miller.

Be advised: I do not watch animated ones, hence I have never seen an episode of The Simpsons or South Park.

Enjoy your weekend, folks. We’ll do our best on the details.

As always, you can reach me by replying to this mailing or by sending me an email here.

Our Coverage

The championship round of the Scotties Tournament of Hearts got underway on Friday and Jason Bell has two reports:

Nitty-gritty: Four Manitoba teams were on the ice and Jay wraps up how they fared heading into the final weekend of the event;

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jeff McIntosh

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jeff McIntosh

Bubble life: He also spins a feature story on what the daily grind of a high-pressure curling championship has been like when you combine it with regular COVID testing, temperature checks, a long list of do’s and don’ts, and plenty of alone time;

In other news:

Game-changers: Hockey remains a predominantly white sport — there are currently just 44 BIPOC (black, Indginenous, persons of colour) in the NHL, and another 46 in the minor-leagues. As the NHL’s Black History Month comes to an end this weekend, Mike McIntyre has a feature that gives voice to several key figures on that front and he also caught up with Kim Davis, who is spearheading the NHL’s diversity movement;

Jets in flight: Mike also has a story looking at the ever-widening gulf in the NHL’s Canadian Division. Ottawa and Vancouver are basically out of it already, Toronto looks to be home-free, and Edmonton and Winnipeg are surging and starting to separate themselves from free-falling Montreal and Calgary;

Winnipeg Jets' Mark Scheifele attempts to take the puck from Montreal Canadiens' Brendan Gallagher Thursday. THE CANADIAN PRESS/John Woods

Net gain: Mike Sawatzky has a story on new Winnipeg Ice goalie Carl Stankowski, who is attempting to rebuild his career after being diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a serious autoimmune disease that wreaked havoc with his diet and ability to stay healthy.

Heads-up, Steve

A special shout-out to reader Darren Causon from Sechelt, B.C., who yesterday pointed out the cover page of this newsletter in its online presentation still had an image of Patrick Laine in a Jets uniform.

Darren grew up in St. Vital, so he’s gotta be a good guy. I had to Google where the heck Sechelt is — you left here for there?!

Our crack digital team changed the Laine pic Friday afternoon and replaced it with one of Brady Tkachuk.

Just kidding — Blake Wheeler
