Incumbent Conservative Marty Morantz is on track to defeat Liberal candidate and former MP Doug Eyolfson in Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia-Headingley by 24 votes after more than thousands of special ballots in the federal riding were counted. There will be a mandatory recount because of the tiny margin of victory.

On Sept. 23, 1949: The Winnipeg Free Press reported the U.K., Canada and the U.S. announced they had learned an atomic explosion had occurred in the Soviet Union in recent weeks. In public remarks, U.S. president Harry Truman did not say the U.S.S.R. possessed an atomic bomb. A youth was in serious condition in a Winnipeg hospital after an attack by two men authorities believed could be responsible for the killing of a taxi driver in Port Arthur, Ont.
