Two women from Long Plain First Nation face robbery charges after a hold-up at an off-reserve smoke and gas bar in Portage la Prairie, RCMP reported Thursday.
Around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Portage la Prairie RCMP said they were notified of a robbery at the Arrowhead Crescent Gas Bar in Long Plain First Nation.
The police investigation revealed that two women had entered the store wielding a knife. They demanded the cashier give them the money from the cash register and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes.
Less than two hours later, police had arrested two suspects with help from the Portage la Prairie RCMP police dog service, the crime reduction unit and Treherne and Amaranth RCMP detachments.
Kayla Cherise Laporte, 27, of Long Plain First Nation has been charged with robbery with a weapon, failing to comply with a recognizance and failing to comply with a probation order. Nicole Eve Laporte, 27, also of Long Plain First Nation is charged with robbery with a weapon, carrying a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence and failing to comply with a probation order.
Both women were scheduled to appear in Portage Provincial Court today, police said.
