The Winnipeg Jets have signed assistant coach Jamie Kompon to a two-year extension, the Free Press has learned.

Kompon, 51, has been with the Jets the last two years, joining the club for the start of the 2016-17 NHL season after serving as head coach and GM of the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks from 2014-16. Prior to that, the native of Thunder Bay, Ont., spent two seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks as an assistant coach, winning the Stanley Cup in his first campaign with the team in 2013.

That was the second of back-to-back titles for Kompon, who also won the Stanley Cup as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings in 2012. In total, he spent six seasons with the Kings (2006-12), including two years, from 2006-08, as L.A.’s director of amateur development. Kompon spent nine seasons with the St. Louis Blues, from 1997-2006, in various roles, including assistant coach, video coach and strength and conditioning coach.

After a slew of injuries playing hockey that included breaks to the wrist, arm, and collar bone; a tear of the medial collateral ligament in both knees; as well as a collapsed lung, Jeff figured it was a good idea to take his interest in sports off the ice and in to the classroom.
