Winnipegers hoping for mosquito relief this summer might be in luck, but it’s too soon to say for sure.
On Friday, Winnipeg’s superintendent of pest control, Ken Nawolsky, said the season began early compared to last year, but that’s not an indication of the summer to come.
“The past weekend, when we had that burst of hot weather, that was enough to trigger them to start hatching. We could have an emergence by late April,” Nawolsky said.
However, the spring species are more docile than summer adult mosquitoes, so even though we’re seeing mosquitoes earlier, there is hope yet.
“Combined with the overwintering adult mosquitoes, and the small emergence of adult spring mosquitoes, we expect a very low population of adult nuisance mosquitoes in the next few weeks,” Nawolsky said.
A better indication of the summer mosquito forecast will come early May, when the mosquito trap results are reported on May 4.
