CBC cuts mean 23 positions in Manitoba gone

The latest round of CBC layoffs will eliminate 23 positions in Manitoba, the Canadian Media Guild’s local president said Friday.

The public broadcaster announced Thursday that 241 positions were being cut across the country, bringing total job losses at the CBC to 1,400 in the past year.

Dominique Delisle, president of the guild’s local CBC/Radio-Canada executive, said the 23 local cuts are spread over the CBC’s English and French operations in Manitoba, including some vacant positions that will not be filled. He declined to offer more specific details because the guild was still in the process of contacting some of its affected members.

Delisle said that among western provinces, Alberta was hardest hit by Thursday’s announcement — the cuts there included the layoff of eight camera people in Calgary and another nine videographers in Edmonton.

“Camera people and editors are the prime targets,” he said, adding that the cuts are part of the CBC’s stated goal of shifting its priority from traditional radio and TV to digital and mobile services.

Last year, CBC president and CEO Hubert Lacroix unveiled a five-year plan that will see the broadcaster trim one-quarter of its workforce by 2020.

“This is the third cut in 18 months, and there’s going to be more,” said Delisle. “We’re not at the end of this process yet.”
