Todd Fanning captured his fifth Manitoba Amateur Golf Championship Thursday.
Fanning came into the final round of the tournament at 12-under, six strokes better than the second place Garth Collings. But it wasn’t easy, as the former Canadian Tour pro had to hold off a charging Charlie Boyechko, who started the round at two-under.
Boyechko nailed seven birdies to go along with a bogey on the 18th hole to sit at 8-under, but it wasn’t enough to catch the struggling Fanning. After the 15th hole both Fanning and Boyechko were tied at nine-under until Fanning made a birdie on the par-5 16 after three-straight bogeys to move to 10-under.
He would par the last two holes and clinch his first amateur title since 1992 before he turned professional.
