Surrounding construction costs feline rescue centre $20K

Craig Street Cats is considering its options after a summer of construction disruption around the city pet shelter.

Road repairs and the building of a new Manitoba Hydro substation around the local feline rescue has cost the organization upwards of $20,000 in revenue over the summer, according to the shelter.

Executive director Lynne Scott says most of those losses can be attributed to the construction work.

“When Manitoba Hydro first let us know about their project we told them of our very real concerns, and discussed the probability that the financial hardship caused by their project would force our closure,” Scott said in a release. “Road construction has made it difficult for people to get here, and the hydro project makes it hard for customers to access the building.”

Craig Street Cats, a not-for-profit working to help reduce Winnipeg’s roaming cat population, is located on Madison Street near St. Matthews Avenue in the Polo Park area.

Scott is worried that if the shelter can’t recover the lost money soon the shelter will be forced to close permanently.

Both the road construction and hydro work are expected to be completed before winter arrives.
