New street signs installed in 171 elementary school zones in Winnipeg have police hoping drivers will slow their roll starting Monday.
Advertising a maximum speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour, the signs were placed in accordance with the Reduced-Speed School Zone Regulation found in the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act. Photo radar cameras will still be used in school zones to ensure the safety of children, said city police.
The penalty for going 50 km/h in a reduced-speed zoned will be $310.
“Children are our most precious resource and the seconds lost travelling at these lower speeds is nothing in comparison to the possible loss of even one life,” police said in a news release.
The new signs are welcome, but the implementation of the new speed limit is long overdue, said Keith Thomas, risk manager for the Manitoba School Boards Association.
“What took us so long to get here?” said Thomas in an interview earlier this month. “What about middle schools and high schools?” he added.
Mostly elementary schools and some middle schools, like Ness Middle School and John W. Gunn Middle School, are currently being targeted for the new speed signs. CAA spokesperson Angele Young said schools needed to place a request with the city in order to obtain the new signs in their areas.
The 30 kilometre per hour speed limit will be enforced from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays from September to June.
