Manitoba posted the biggest percentage increase in retail sales in the country in March, with sales up nearly two per cent from the previous month, Statistics Canada said today.

The agency said the province’s retailers reported $1.52 billion worth of sales for the month. That was a 1.9 per cent increase from February’s total of just over $1.49 billion.

It was also 2.2 per cent improvement from March of last year, when sales were just under $1.49 billion.

Ontario had the second biggest month-over-month percentage gain, at 1.5 per cent, but the biggest increase in dollar terms, Statistics Canada noted.

Nationally, retail sales rose for the second consecutive month in March, climbing by 0.7 per cent to $42.5 billion from $42.2 billion in February. The year-over-year increase was 3.1 per cent.

Statistics Canada said despite these increases, retail sales in Canada still remain below their historic peak recorded in November of last year.
