Sounds like the Assiniboine Park Zoo was more of a maternity ward last Friday.

On May 15, zoo officials welcomed the arrival of a male baby musk ox, who is currently on exhibit in the Journey to Churchill exhibit.

In addition, two snow leopard cubs were also born on the 15th, but remain off exhibit with their mother for their time being.

“It’s certainly been an exciting week here at the zoo,” said Dr. Chris Enright, head of Veterinary Services. “All of the newborns are healthy and happy. It looks like it’s going to be a beautiful weekend and the perfect time for people to visit the zoo and meet the new musk ox.”

Also new at the zoo are daily “Animal Encounters with Zookeepers,” an explorer hunt in which families navigate the zoo to learn about the animals, then visit the gift shop to receive an official explorer button.

The zoo’s seasonal exhibit Australian Walkabout is also open, as well as the Zoo Loo Kangaroo ride, a fun theme-park style ride for kids and adults.

The Assiniboine Park Zoo is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For full details, visit assiniboineparkzoo.ca.
