A site for an off-leash dog park in the downtown area should be chosen by the end of year.

Wednesday’s budget set aside $300,000 for a downtown off-leash dog park.

“The downtown dog park is something I committed during the campaign and that’s a commitment I wanted to see honoured,” Bowman said.

Bowman said city staff are researching potential sites for an off-leash park, adding he expects a final site to be chosen before the end of the year.

Bowman said the $300,000 set aside for the park is only an estimate, adding he hopes it won’t be necessary to spend the entire amount.

A downtown dog park should be seen as an attraction for all city residents, Bowman said, making it another amenity to attract people to the city’s core.

“I’d like to see it as a destination for Winnipeggers in the suburbs, to have a reason to come downtown to spend time with their families and their pets and also for downtown residents.”

Bowman said the downtown site will be chosen independently of efforts to develop a master plan for off-leash dog parks across the city – where they will be situated, and regulations for their use.

“The downtown (off-leash) park was a very specific promise in the (election) campaign and I want to fulfill that campaign pledge,” Bowman said. “The overall plan for the entire city, it will probably come at a later date.”
