Passenger volumes soared to a record high last year at Winnipeg’s Richardson International Airport.
The Winnipeg Airports Authority reported today that 3.67 million passengers boarded flights last year at the airport. That’s a 5.3 per cent improvement from the previous record of 3.57 million set in 2007.
Earlier this week, the WAA released the traffic volumes for the fourth quarter alone. They showed a 6.9 per cent increaser from the same period in 2013.
The WAA attributed the increase to airlines adding some new routes during the year, and also expanding service on some existing ones.
It noted WestJet Encore reintroduced twice-daily flights to Regina, Saskatoon and Thunder Bay, as well as direct service to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Sunwing also added service to Cayo Coco and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and to Orlando, Fla. It also added one additional flight per week to Varadero, Cuba.
“We were very pleased by the response of our partner airlines who, upon recognizing the potential of this market, responded by increasing capacity and introducing new routes,” said WAA president and CEO Barry Rempel.
“Travellers to and from our region responded positively by travelling more frequently than at any time in prior years,” he added.
The WAA said cargo traffic through the airport also remained strong, with 5,087 movements during the year.
It noted Winnipeg receives daily transborder service from both UPS and FedEx. It’s also a major hub for Cargojet Airlines and Purolator.
