The power is back on for residents in Garden City following a lengthy outage Wednesday evening.

The Manitoba Hydro Twitter account sent out a message overnight that service was restored at 1:44 a.m. Approximately 4,000 people in the Garden City area went to bed without power, hydro said.

A fire at the top of a hydro pole at Kingsbury Avenue and McPhillips Street at about 6:40 p.m. saw roughly 9,000 customers in the Garden City, West Kildonan and East Kildonan neighbourhoods without power Wednesday evening.

Service was eventually restored to approximately 5,000 homes and business at 8:30 p.m., but those living in the area between McGregor Street to the west and the Red River to east, Leila Avenue to the north and Inkster Boulevard to the south were without service until early this morning.
