On Dec. 17, 1959: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a Trans-Canada Airlines flight, backed by a 115-knot tail wind, cut nearly an hour from the regular flight time from Winnipeg to Toronto, making the journey in two and a half hours. France, under pressure from NATO allies, agreed to technical talks on a unified defence system in Western Europe. Saskatchewan premier Tommy Douglas predicted that, under a CCF government, the province would start a province-wide compulsory medical care program in 1961. READ MORE
