On Sept. 18, 1981: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the Soviet Union’s national hockey team would happily receive a Winnipeg-manufactured copy of the Canada Cup trophy; the copy was the idea of local businessman George Smith, who said the Soviet Union legitimately won the six-nation tournament and deserved to have a trophy as a symbol of its victory.
