Cougars goalie turns aside Bisons

Dawson MacAuley was the man of the hour and then some Friday night.

The towering 24-year-old goaltender made 36 saves to backstop the Regina Cougars to their first victory of the season, a 3-1 decision over the Manitoba Bisons in Canada West conference men’s university hockey action at Wayne Fleming Arena Friday night.

Zach McPhee, while short-handed, and Arthur Miller scored second-period goals for the Cougars, who improved to 1-3-1. Corey Kosloski added a third-period marker for the visitors, who led 3-0 in the third period before the Bisons mounted a late surge in an attempt to close the gap.

Brett Brooks had the lone goal for the Bisons, who fell to 2-3-0.

Manitoba outshot Regina 15-8 in the final period. The hosts were unable to beat MacAuley with goaltender Byron Spriggs on the bench in favour of an extra attacker during the final 90 seconds of the game.

Spriggs finished with 32 stops.

The Cougars were scoreless in four power-play chances while the Bisons went 0-for-3.

The teams meet again this afternoon. Game time is 2 p.m.
