The beards will once again take centre stage for a night at Festival du Voyageur in 2015.

The 33rd annual Beard Growing Contest will launch on Dec. 18, 2014 at Garage Café on Provencher Blvd from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The proceeds from the contest will go towards the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Participants who enter the “Festival Beard” category are expected to be clean shaven on the 18th and then they will let their beard grow until the Beard Growing Contest on Friday, Feb. 20, 2015 at Festival. During the ten weeks between shaving and the contest, participants will also be asked to raise funds for the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Other categories for the Beard Growing Contest include the Open Category, meaning people don’t have to grow an actual beard, but they have to show off their creative skills and make a beard of their own. Whoever has the most creative beard will take home the grand prize.

Other categories in this year’s contest are the Voyageur Beard – which goes to the person with the wildest and woolliest beard – and the Novelty category – which goes to the best groomed mustache or beard.

Registration is $35, but participants who raise more than $100 during the time between the 18th and Festival will be exempt from the registration fee. Participants will also receive a souvenir package, including an official event T-shirt and a 10-day pass for the Festival.

Festival du Voyageur runs from Feb. 13-Feb. 22 this year.

All participants must be over 18 to participate in the contest; more information can be found at www.heho.ca.
