The Blue Bombers plan to keep back-up pivot Josh Portis in the fold, extending the pending free agent’s contract through the end of the 2016 season.

The club picked Portis up in a trade with Toronto last July. He served as a fourth-string through the season, but did dress for the final three games. The Bombers believe the 27-year-old QB could develop into something more. “We believe Josh has tremendous upside as a mobile quarterback in our league,” Blue Bombers GM Kyle Walters said in a release. “He works hard at practice and in the film room every day.

“The ability to have multiple options at the quarterback position, that you can truly feel comfortable with, is invaluable, and as Josh continues to grow he would definitely fall into that category.”

Portis was slated to become a free agent in February. Before he signed on with the Argonauts in 2013, he’d done time with the Seattle Seahawks as third-string QB and on their practice roster.
