On Aug. 15, 1935: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that prime minister R.B. Bennett had reorganized his cabinet ministers, dissolved Parliament and called a general election for Oct. 14. Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie mobilized forces to strengthen his country’s northern borders against the Italian threat. In Winnipeg, a cyclist was struck by a car on Main Street and thrown from his bicycle, suffering a fracture of the left shoulder and abrasions to his head; he was taken to hospital by police.
