The Winnipeg Goldeyes should be fresh ahead of tonight’s start of a seven-game homestand at Shaw Park.
The team got an extra-long break this weekend because of a rained-out doubleheader against the Milwaukee Milkmen on Saturday afternoon. The Milkmen are new to the American Association this year in replacement of the Wichita Wingnuts, who disbanded their team due to ballpark reconstruction. Goldeyes fans may have fond memories of the Wingnuts, after the team’s 2016 and 2017 back-to-back losses in the league’s championship series against the Goldeyes.
Winnipeg went 2-for-4 on its shortened road trip, first winning a three-game series in Gary, Ind., two games to one, then losing its first-ever game to the Milkmen 2-1 on Friday.
Pitching was a strong point for the Fish. They showed off their arms against the Gary SouthShore RailCats, with Parker French going 8 2/3 innings and matching a career-high eight strikeouts on Tuesday. Closer Victor Capellan finished the job to record his 38th save as a Goldeye, breaking a franchise record.
On Thursday, Mitchell Lambson also went the distance against the Cats, propelling his team to a 5-0 victory. The starting pitcher threw a complete-game shutout — the first for a Goldeyes player this season and the fourth of his career.
The Fish also beefed up their pitching roster with the signing of right-handed pitcher Joel Seddon on Saturday. Seddon pitched in double-A ball last year for the Midland Rockies and may have some chemistry with Goldeyes first baseman Kyle Martin, as the pair were college teammates at the University of South Carolina.
With three days of rest behind them, the Goldeyes are looking forward to a homestand. Tonight, they begin a three-game series against the Chicago Dogs, with the first pitch at 7 p.m. The Dogs are 16-10 and second in the North Division, one place ahead of the Goldeyes. With the Fish at 16-11, this series is a great opportunity for Winnipeg to take a few games away from Chicago and secure a higher place in the standings. This is the first time the teams will be meeting this season.
On Friday, the Milkmen will visit Shaw Park for the first time and play in a four-game series. This includes a doubleheader on Saturday, to make up for last Saturday’s rained-out game. Fans who buy tickets to Saturday’s game will have admission for both of the matches.
Currently, Milwaukee is last in the North Division at 12-16. Before coming to Winnipeg, they will play a three-game series against the Lincoln Saltdogs, who are currently second in the South Division.
