Cineplex’s Kildonan Place cinemas are getting a multi-million dollar makeover that will see the East Kildonan multiplex transformed into a “reimagined entertainment destination” by 2021, according to a Cineplex spokesperson.
Prior to the announcement, Famous Players Kildonan Place Cinemas was like the neglected child of the Cineplex family in Winnipeg. While other first-run theatres have been augmented by state-of-the-art game areas, luxury lounges and adult-only screening spaces, Kildonan Place trundled along with basic amenities one might find at the budget house at Cinema City Northgate.
But after nearly three decades of operation, an all-new 35,000 square foot complex will enjoy a reinvention with construction beginning late in 2020 in an all-new space, the area formerly occupied by Sears. The new structure will retain six cinemas, but with all new appointments including luxury reclining seats.
One of the auditoriums will be equipped with an Ultra AVX projection, screen and sound system.
Cineplex also promises moviegoers “an all-in-one entertainment experience,” that will include “a large amusement games and attractions area where kids and grown-ups alike can engage in some friendly competition and earn points for great prizes,” according to a press release.
In addition to new and classic video and redemption games, guests can enjoy unique interactive experiences as well as virtual reality from VRstudios.”
Guests can also look forward to an expanded list of food and beverage options, according to the release.
The yet unnamed complex will be built by Cineplex in partnership with Primaris Management Inc., which operates Kildonan Place Shopping Centre.
The last local Cineplex house to enjoy a major refurbishment was Cineplex McGillivray and VIP. The former second-run budget house Cinema City was relaunched in 2012 with a $4.5-million renovation that saw it transform into a first-run multiplex with eight regular theatre auditoriums and three special adults-only VIP cinemas that accommodate food and liquor orders brought right to your seat.
Cineplex’s other local multiplexes include the Silver City complex in the St. Vital Shopping Centre and the Scotiabank Cinemas at Polo Park.
