On June 17, 1911: The Manitoba Free Press reported that a disastrous fire in Swift Current, Sask., that started in a hardware store, caused $150,000 in damage. In London, the Imperial conference agreed to a proposal by Sir Wilfred Laurier to appoint a royal commission to overseas dominions to report on trade and resources and the best methods for their development. In Manitoba, a campaign of training and education was begun to recruit Indigenous people between Manitoba and Hudson Bay to help fight forest fires. READ MORE
