G.I. (Ike) Smith was sworn in as Nova Scotia’s 18th premier since Confederation, succeeding Robert L. Stanfield. U.S. president Lyndon Johnson approved bombing attacks on North Vietnamese facilities at Haiphong and Cam Pha despite strong objections from defence secretary Robert McNamara. Former U.S. vice-president Richard Nixon criticized the Johnson administration’s foreign policy, while California governor Ronald Reagan said he favoured a sharp escalation of the war in Vietnam.
