George Reznik, the Winnipeg jazz pianist who shared the stage with the likes of Louis Armstrong, Barbra Streisand and Lenny Breau during a career that stretched over six decades, died Saturday. He was 86.
Reznik’s teamwork with Winnipeg guitarist Breau led to spots on CBC television when he wasn’t performing at old jazz hotspots like the Rancho Don Carlos nightclub on Pembina Highway, where he appeared with Armstrong, and the Royal Alex Hotel on Main Street.
Reznik met his wife, Carol, during a gig at the old Town and Country club on Kennedy Street, and they were married for over 50 years. She was at his side when he died at Victoria General Hospital, says Reznik’s obituary, which ran in Tuesday’s Free Press.
In 1990, at age 61, Reznik put together a jazz trio with bassist Bob (Moose) Jackson and drummer Bill McMahon that hosted a weekly jazz session every Saturday afternoon at the Pemby Hotel. Reznik performed with the group at the Pemby for 21 years before retiring in 2011.
“My hands are OK, the brain’s functional, but I’ve got arthritis in my spine,” the pianist said in an interview with the Free Press. “My body said, ‘Slow down, babes.’”
A burial service for Reznik will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Brebeuf Roman Catholic Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Place.
