The province is seeking public input on the future of recycling and the disposal of certain materials.

Sustainable Development Minister Cathy Cox formally announced the initiative today, although the government began advertising its review this past weekend.

She said the government wants to hear what citizens think about newly developed five-year plans for various industry-led programs for the collection and recycling of waste.

Producer responsibility organizations (PROs) have submitted program plans for products such as paper and packaging, paint, fluorescent lights, electronics, batteries, unused medications, mercury-containing thermostats, tires and more.

Currently the province has 12 industry-led stewardship programs that divert approximately 120,000 tonnes of designated materials from landfills and generate about $42 million in revenue annually, the minister said.

The stewardship plans are available for review on the Green Manitoba website http://greenmanitoba.ca/new-stewardship-plans/. Printed copies of the plans are available by calling 204-945-0578 or 1-866-460-3118 (toll-free). The deadline for comment on the plans is Oct. 4. Submissions can be sent via email to stewardship@greenmanitoba.ca or submitted in writing to:
