One Manitoba resident is dead and three others were injured following a pair of collisions on Highway 3 less than a day apart.

At about 6:40 a.m. Wednesday, Headingley RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision five kilometres north of Sanford in the RM of Macdonald.

Investigators believe a northbound car driven by a 28-year-old man from Winnipeg veered into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a semi-trailer, RCMP said.

The driver of the car was pronounced deceased at the scene. As of Wednesday afternoon, it was not yet known if he was wearing a seatbelt or if alcohol was a factor, police said.

The driver of the semi, a 46-year-old man from Winnipeg, was not injured.

Sixteen hours earlier, at about 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, officers from the Carman RCMP detachment had responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 3, three kilometres north of Sperling, in the RM of Morris.

Investigators believe a southbound pickup truck crossed over the centre line and collided head-on with a northbound service utility truck, police said Wednesday. Both vehicles ended up in the ditch.

The driver of the pickup, a 68-year-old man from Gimli, was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries, which has since been upgraded to stable but serious. A 65-year-old female passenger in the pickup, also from Gimli, suffered minor injuries.

The 49-year-old male driver of the service truck, from La Broquerie, also suffered minor injuries.

Charges are being considered under the Highway Traffic Act. Alcohol was not a factor in this collision, RCMP said.
