If you are looking this summer to visit one of Canada’s top attractions, look no further than Winnipeg.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) has been named second among the top 10 attractions in Canada by voters in the USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice travel awards, which was released Friday.

The top 10 attractions in Canada were determined by tabulation of votes from people who went online to select their favourite attraction from a list of 20 nominations from across the country. The list of 20 nominations was compiled by a panel of Canadian travel writers and 10Best editors.

“As a new national museum, we are thrilled to receive this kind of recognition from such a popular North American travel site, alongside some of the most well-known and beloved attractions in the country,” said CMHR president and CEO John Young in a statement.

“This award has once again raised the profile of Winnipeg and the Museum among a global audience, and will motivate more visitors to make the trip to Manitoba, where Canada’s heart beats.”

Winnipeg’s CMHR was the runner-up to Old Québec City, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Manitoba had a second tourism destination in contention for the top 10 as tours in Churchill to see polar bears were also on the list of 20 nominations.

Rounding out the top 10 were the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia, the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, Alta., Athabasca Falls in Jasper, Alta., Peggy’s Point Lighthouse in Peggy’s Cove, N.S., the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park in Vancouver, B.C., The Butchart Gardens in Victoria, B.C., Old Montreal in Montreal, Que. and Lake Louise in Alberta.

Attractions in addition to Churchill that were nominated included Toronto’s CN Tower, Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta, Green Gables Heritage Place in Cavendish, P.E.I., Mount Royal Park in Montreal, Que., Niagara Falls in Ontario, Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Peak 2 Peak Gondola in Whistler, B.C., the Rideau Canal in Ottawa and Stanley Park in Vancouver.

The USA Today 10Best is a travel and lifestyle advice website associated with one of the largest newspapers in the United States, and ranks among the top 10 most-visited travel information sites in North America, as measured by comScore.
