Living in limbo: A woman from El Salvador was turned away at the Emerson border crossing because of an agreement that prohibits people from seeking asylum at border crossings, even though people who sneak across can do so. There’s no way of knowing how many people mistakenly think they can apply for refugee status at border crossings, Carol Sanders writes. READ MORE

Elder Dave Courchene, carrying a sacred fire torch carried from Manitou Api in Whiteshell Provincial Park by indigenous athletes, lights the Centennial Torch during a lighting ceremony at the Manitoba Legislature in Winnipeg, Wednesday, June 21, 2017. The 1967 Pan American Games’ Centennial Torch was re-ignited as part of a day of indigenous cultural ceremonies.

Long road to respect: In 1967, Dave Courchene was one of 10 indigenous teens who ran hundreds of kilometres in the Pan American torch relay but were forced to hand the flame to a non-indigenous man to light the cauldron at the finish line. On Wednesday, Courchene lit the Centennial Torch on Memorial Boulevard — a symbol of the upcoming Canada Summer Games — on National Aboriginal Day. Stefanie Lasuik reports. READ MORE

The Vegas Golden Knights threw Jets fans a curveball and selected Chris Thorburn in the NHL expansion draft Wednesday.

Surprising selection: The Vegas Golden Knights stunned fans and pundits by selecting free-agent forward Chris Thorburn from the Winnipeg Jets in Thursday’s NHL expansion draft. The selection was the result of a trade in which the Golden Knights acquired Winnipeg’s first-round pick in Friday’s entry draft and a third-round pick in 2019. In exchange, the Jets received a lower first-round pick in this year’s draft acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets. Mike Sawatzky reports. READ MORE
