On Oct. 23, 1935: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a Winnipeg motorist attempting to avoid colliding with a Canadian Pacific train that was crossing Notre Dame Avenue was struck by the train and decapitated. A previously undisclosed 1927 kidnapping in London, Ont., worth $30,000, came to light during the trial of a man charged with the abduction of John S. Labatt. Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia said he would be willing to discuss peace with Italian president Mussolini only after Italy halted its invasion and got its soldiers out of his country.
