A woman was charged with impaired driving causing death following a fatal two-vehicle collision on Highway 45.

Yellowhead RCMP responded to the crash five kilometres east of Elphinstone, just after 4 p.m. Wednesday. A woman was pronounced dead at the scene and four people were transported to hospital with serious injuries.

A 27-year-old woman from Waywayseecappo has been charged with impaired driving causing death, five counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm and multiple counts related to refusal to provide breath and blood samples.

She was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police determined the 27-year-old female was driving a car southbound on Road 122 West when she failed to brake at a stop sign at the intersection with Highway 45. The car hit an SUV travelling east on Highway 45.

There were four people in the car and two in the SUV.

The front passenger of the car, a 31-year-old woman from Keeseekoowenin Ojibway First Nation, died on scene. The other passengers, a 29-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries and remain in hospital.

The driver of the SUV was a woman and her passenger was a 52-year-old man. Both were from Keeseekoowenin and were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Yellowhead RCMP and a forensic collision reconstructionist are carrying out the investigation.

It is believed all involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Elphinstone is located about 100 kilometres northwest of Brandon.
