A 28-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to his upper back, face and head early Sunday morning in the area of Salter Street and Redwood Avenue.

Winnipeg police responded to the incident at about 2:40 a.m. Sunday and located the man, who was hit in several spots by pellets that exploded from within the bullet.

He was transported to hospital in unstable condition, but was treated and has since been released.

Police spokeswoman Const. Tammy Skrabek said there are currently no suspects in custody and no knowledge of where the shooter was or what weapon was used beyond that a shotgun was fired.

Skrabek said the victim has been unable to speak to police yet due to the nature of his injuries and subsequent medical treatment.

An investigation by the major crimes unit is underway, and anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
