Winnipeg police arrested a 32-year-old man Sunday following a shooting in a back lane near Parr Street and Boyd Avenue on Saturday.

On Aug. 12 at 8:15 p.m., police were alerted about a man lying in the back lane, screaming due to a gunshot wound to his leg. The victim, 32, was transported to hospital in unstable condition but has since been upgraded to stable. His injuries are considered serious but not life threatening.

During a routine spot check downtown the next day, police located and arrested the suspect, charging him with aggravated assault and several firearm-related offences.

Officers observed the suspect without knowing who he was, but were “able to put two and two together” to confirm his involvement in the previous day’s shooting, said Const. Tammy Skrabek, who attributed the arrest to information given by the victim, people in the area and “some good luck.”

When a search warrant was executed at the suspect’s residence, police were unable to locate the weapon allegedly used in the shooting.

Skrabek said both the victim and suspect were known to police, but not to each other.

There wasn’t much information available about what led up to the shooting, but she said there were no prior altercations known by police.

“(The victim) was literally just in the area. He wasn’t involved in a party, he wasn’t involved in an incident,” Skrabek said.

As of Monday morning, police had yet to recover any weapon in connection with the shooting, but the suspect has been detained in custody.
