The University of Winnipeg will be going green when investing its green.

Announced Monday, the university’s board of regents has a brand new investment policy that was created and approved by UWinnipeg’s Foundation, a charitable fundraising and asset management arm of the U of W. The new policy is meant to guide the university’s endowments into creating a renewable energy investment fund.

In a news release distributed Monday, the U of W notes that the policy comes on the heels of months of discussions initiated by a student movement aimed at encouraging the university to divest from fossil fuels.

The new policy dictates that all future investment decisions take into account environmental, social and governance factors or ESG. As part of the process, potential investment vehicles will be examined for their stewardship of the natural environment, how they manage relationships with employees, customers and the community as well as how the company’s leadership deals with issues like executive pay, audits and internal controls.

The release states that this strategy puts the University of Winnipeg on an investment path similar to those taken by other Canadian universities.
