A St. James bar was a scene of mayhem Tuesday evening after staff and patrons went after an intruder who fired a shotgun into the ceiling of the business.

At about 8:30 p.m., three men wearing disguises entered Gizzys Restaurant and Bar in the 3000 block of Ness Avenue. One of the intruders was armed with a shotgun and told everyone to get down on the floor, police said. He fired one shot into the ceiling but then was overpowered by employees and customers. During the confrontation, a man who works at the bar was injured. He was taken to hospital in stable condition and later released.

Winnipeg police spokeswoman Const. Tammy Skrabek said confronting an armed intruder “is not something we’d suggest.”

Police recommend playing it safe by complying with an armed intruder’s demands. “Fortunately, it turned out OK for the patrons of the bar,” she said. “There were a lot of people present at the time.”

The police tactical support team and Air1 helicopter responded to the report of shots fired inside the bar but the three suspects had fled by the time police arrived.

Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
